Danone has inaugurated a €70 million medical nutrition production line at its Steenvoorde factory in northern France, a move designed to expand the country's capacity to make specialized nutritional products for patients.

The company announced the opening on September 15, 2026. The investment had first been presented in 2024. That distinction is important: this is an inaugurated production line, not simply an investment pledge.

What is being produced

Medical nutrition products are formulated to help people who cannot meet their dietary needs through ordinary food alone, including some patients who need targeted nutritional support. They are a separate market from ordinary yoghurt, milk and snack foods.

Danone is using its Nutricia business to expand in this category. Such products require controlled ingredients, traceability and appropriate manufacturing and regulatory standards because they are intended for specific nutritional needs.

Why the investment matters

Steenvoorde is being positioned as a larger European manufacturing centre for medical nutrition. Additional capacity can help Danone serve healthcare channels and meet demand associated with ageing populations and chronic illness.

Danone's previously announced Steenvoorde plans described eventual production of about 20 million litres of oral nutritional supplements, across nearly 30 formulas and 115 product references. Those figures describe the original plan, not independently verified output already achieved by the newly opened line.

Industrial and supply-chain context

Medical nutrition manufacturing links dairy and other food ingredients with highly controlled processing, packaging, specialist distribution and healthcare demand. A dedicated line also concentrates technical expertise and procurement at the French site.

An opening does not establish that sales or production will immediately reach full capacity. Demand, qualified supply chains and the gradual ramp-up of operations will determine the investment's commercial contribution.
