Smeg AFC01 Air Fryer: What Its Steam Assisted 7 Liter Design Adds

Smeg's AFC01 is the company's new dedicated air fryer, built around a top opening basket rather than the familiar front drawer. The Matte White European model carries product code AFC01WHMEU and pairs the brand's Collezione styling with a transparent lid, touch controls and a steam assisted cooking option.

The appliance has a 7 liter maximum capacity, seven automatic programs and a manual mode. Smeg lists a temperature range from 40 to 200 degrees Celsius and power of 1,450 watts, positioning it for family portions rather than the smaller batches handled by compact fryers.

Its main distinction is the choice between Crispy and Juicy plus Crispy modes. Crispy uses circulating hot air for browning, while Juicy plus Crispy adds controlled moisture from a 60 milliliter water tank. The intended result is a crisp exterior with more moisture retained inside, although that performance claim comes from the manufacturer rather than independent testing.

A transparent cooking window and internal light let users check food without opening the lid. Pressing the central release raises the top for access to the removable basket, and silicone handles provide two grip points when lifting it out.

The aluminum basket and grill rack use a ceramic nonstick coating that Smeg describes as made without PFAS. Both are dishwasher safe. The design therefore addresses two common air fryer complaints, difficult cleanup and the need to interrupt cooking to inspect progress.

The appliance measures 322 millimeters wide, 310 millimeters deep and 310 millimeters high, with a net weight of 5.6 kilograms. Its nearly square footprint is visually tidy, but shoppers should account for the vertical clearance required by the flip opening lid.

Electrical compatibility is important. This specific European version is rated for 220 to 240 volts and uses a Schuko plug, so it should not be treated as a United States model. Buyers outside the listed market should wait for an approved local version with the correct voltage, plug and warranty rather than relying on a simple travel adapter.

The AFC01 is most compelling for buyers who value design, a large single basket and the option to add moisture during air frying. Its window, broad temperature range and washable components are practical strengths. The key unanswered question is whether the steam assisted mode improves real meals enough to justify choosing it over mature and often less expensive rivals.
