Mahindra & Mahindra's domestic tractor sales fell 23 percent year on year in September to 50,208 units, even as exports rose sharply, creating a mixed monthly picture for the world's largest tractor company by volume.

Domestic sales were down from 64,946 units in September 2025. Mahindra said the comparison was affected by a later festive season this year and by an unusually high base created by India's tractor GST reduction in September 2025.

Exports moved in the opposite direction, rising 62 percent to 1,892 units from 1,165 a year earlier.

Total September tractor sales, combining domestic and exports, were 52,100 units, down 21 percent from 66,111 in the same month last year.

The monthly decline does not erase stronger year-to-date performance. Cumulative domestic sales through September reached 262,872 units, up 6 percent, while exports were 11,196 units, up 16 percent.

The numbers are important because tractor sales are closely watched as an indicator of rural investment, farm confidence and mechanisation demand in India.

Mahindra's explanation differs from a simple demand-collapse story: the company attributes much of September's year-on-year weakness to calendar timing and the distorted comparison with last year's tax-driven surge.

October will therefore be a more informative test. A festive-season rebound would support Mahindra's explanation, while continued weakness would point to broader pressure on farm equipment demand.
