UC Davis Wheat Geneticist Jorge Dubcovsky Wins 2026 World Agriculture Prize
UC Davis distinguished professor Jorge Dubcovsky has been named a 2026 World Agriculture Prize laureate in the category for countries with developed economies. The award from GCHERA recognizes his scientific work in wheat genetics and its contribution to crop improvement and food security.
Dubcovsky’s research has helped identify and characterize genes associated with yield, disease resistance, flowering time, nutrient-use efficiency and adaptation. UC Davis says discoveries from his work have been adopted by breeding programs and contributed to improved wheat varieties cultivated across millions of hectares.
The award highlights the long pipeline behind crop improvement
Genetic discoveries do not become farm productivity gains automatically. They move through breeding, testing, seed multiplication and regional adaptation before growers can capture value in the field.
The prize is therefore recognition of a research career rather than a new commercial wheat release. Its industry relevance is the accumulated impact of genetic tools that allow breeders to develop varieties with better productivity, resilience and adaptation.
