Women managed 17.2% of the European Union's utilised agricultural area in the most recent regional figures highlighted by Eurostat on 15 October 2026. The underlying observations are from 2023, so the headline is a newly published analysis of older survey data, not a claim that the same precise percentage has been measured for farms in 2026.

What the figures mean

The territorial differences are considerable. Eurostat reported that women managers oversaw just 2.7% of agricultural area in Friesland in the Netherlands, versus 42.5% in Upper Austria. The highest-to-lowest ratio is approximately 15.7, although the two regions differ widely in farm structure and total usable agricultural area. It is a comparison of area managed, not the proportion of women working in agriculture.

Across the 241 EU NUTS-2 regions with available data, 134—about 55.6%—had a female-managed farmland share below the EU average. This statistic does not by itself establish discrimination or individual access to credit; it shows the distribution of formal management of land, and makes a case for examining succession, ownership and finance systems more closely.

Area is particularly relevant because a small number of large farms can account for a disproportionate share of crop supply, machinery purchases and borrowing. Eurostat notes women farm managers more frequently operate relatively small holdings. The business footprint of female-led agriculture is therefore not measured adequately by counting the number of female managers alone.

Farm succession can change these patterns as older managers retire and family businesses transfer control. But the pipeline depends on inheritance rules, available training, lease contracts, access to capital and the profitability of agricultural careers. More women entering smaller holdings need not immediately change the EU-wide share of land they manage.

Outlook and methodology

Banks, machinery suppliers and advisory programmes seeking underserved markets should compare manager counts with managed area, economic output and credit access at regional level. Changes over time, not a single geographic contrast, would show whether EU farm governance is diversifying.

Methodology: Agrilinkage used Eurostat's 15 October 2026 regional news release and its underlying 2023 utilised agricultural area measures. The ratio 42.5 divided by 2.7 is a descriptive comparison rather than a causal analysis.
