England's 2026 Barley Harvest Falls 11% While Wheat Reaches 10.8 Million Tonnes

England's first official estimate of the 2026 cereal harvest puts wheat production at 10.8 million tonnes, up 0.8% on 2025, while barley production dropped 11% to 3.7 million tonnes. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published the provisional figures on October 8.

Different stories for wheat and barley

The increase in wheat came despite a reduction in planted area, because higher average yields offset the smaller area. Barley moved in the opposite direction: the planted area contracted and the crop's average yield also declined.

This matters to flour millers, feed buyers, maltsters and grain traders because a change in total harvest tonnage is the combined result of how many hectares were planted and how much each hectare produced.

Why the figures are provisional

These numbers cover England only. They do not include Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and they are not a final UK cereal production estimate. The department expects to incorporate the rest of the country in its final United Kingdom estimates in December 2026.

The release also reports falling oat yields and rising oilseed rape yields. Farmers and commodity buyers should use the detailed dataset for crop-specific decisions rather than applying the national wheat trend across every crop or region.

Market implications

A smaller English barley crop can matter for livestock feed and malting supply, although actual prices depend on grain quality, inventories and imported supplies as well as the harvest. The near-flat wheat output does not automatically mean there will be no pressure on flour or feed prices.

The next useful evidence will include crop-quality reports, trade movements, storage and the finalized production statistics. Harvest estimates describe supply, not future prices.
