Carlsberg Kazakhstan has opened a new US$344 million beverage manufacturing plant in Boraldai in the Almaty Region, one of the largest recent investments in the country's food and beverage sector.

The facility is designed to produce up to one billion liters of beverages a year at full scale and begins with five production lines covering multiple beverage categories and packaging formats.

The plant will manufacture PepsiCo beverages under license for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, strengthening the commercial partnership between Carlsberg and PepsiCo in Central Asia.

Carlsberg says Kazakhstan will remain the primary market while the facility also supplies Kyrgyzstan, giving the site a regional manufacturing and distribution role.

The project is expected to create more than 230 direct jobs and support additional employment in packaging, logistics, warehousing, transport and business services.

Local sourcing is also part of the strategy. Carlsberg Kazakhstan says 71.5 percent of its procurement is already local and that it plans to increase the range and volume of materials sourced from domestic suppliers.

The plant incorporates water management, energy efficiency, heat recovery, waste reduction and packaging systems intended to lower resource use and improve operating efficiency.

For Central Asia's beverage industry, the investment adds substantial local capacity while shortening supply routes for branded products that might otherwise rely more heavily on imports.
