The United States opens the second 100,000 tonne tranche of its temporary additional beef import quota on October 1, creating another window for lower tariff access to lean beef trimmings.

The White House expanded the 2026 quota by 300,000 metric tonnes in August as part of an effort to increase beef supply and address high consumer prices.

The additional volume is divided into three tranches of 100,000 tonnes each. The first runs through September 30, the second from October 1 through October 30 and the third opens October 31.

The quota applies to specified lean beef trimming tariff lines and is allocated to the category covering other countries or areas rather than to a single named supplier.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says qualifying entries at the opening moment can be prorated if demand exceeds the available tranche, making timing important for importers.

Lean beef imports are important to the U.S. processing sector because they are commonly blended with higher fat domestic beef to produce ground beef.

The additional quota does not guarantee lower retail prices by itself. Cattle supplies, processing capacity, freight, exchange rates and wholesale demand also influence the final cost of beef.

For exporters and U.S. importers, October 1 is therefore an operational deadline. The second tranche creates another 100,000 tonnes of potential lower tariff access, but competition for the quota may be intense.
