Tetra Pak has entered industrial fermentation equipment with the Tetra Pak Bioreactor RF, a system offered in sizes from 10 to 50,000 litres. Launched in July 2026, it is the company’s first industrial bioreactor following its December 2025 acquisition of Bioreactors.net.

The system is aimed at food and ingredient producers scaling fermentation processes that use yeast, bacteria or fungi. Tetra Pak presents a common platform across pilot and production sizes so operating logic and training can remain more consistent as capacity increases.

A patented magnetic agitation system is the central mechanical feature. Tetra Pak says eliminating conventional mechanical seals reduces a known contamination and process instability point while maintaining power and oxygen transfer across the size range.

The unit is pre assembled and factory tested. Tetra Pak estimates that a typical commissioning period can fall from about 12 weeks for its conventional baseline to around six weeks for the Bioreactor RF, although actual project timing will depend on site conditions and integration.

Automation includes self adjusting control functions, predefined operating strategies and integrated data monitoring. The purpose is to help operators stabilize changing processes with less manual intervention, not to remove the need for process development and validation.

Tetra Pak claims up to 8% lower investment cost and up to 12% lower operating cost against its stated comparison scenarios. Those percentages are vendor estimates based on assumptions including staffing, platform cost, commissioning time and contamination probability, so buyers should test them against their own process economics.

The cost model uses a baseline operating cost of about €2.87 million and attributes savings to lower staffing requirements and reduced contamination risk. Tetra Pak also estimates batch loss at roughly €1,000 per cubic metre across two illustrative production scenarios.

The strongest buying case is not one headline percentage but the combination of scale continuity, seal free agitation, factory testing and modular configuration. Producers should compare cleanability, oxygen transfer, control validation, service coverage and total installed cost with their specific organism and product before selecting a system.
