SunOpta says its fourth production line at the Midlothian, Texas, beverage plant is now operating, expanding the company’s network capacity by approximately 10 percent. The addition gives the facility new half gallon and 32 ounce Edge style packaging capabilities for plant based beverages, broths and teas.

The new formats broaden what the site can produce for brands, retailers and foodservice customers without requiring a separate factory. That matters in shelf stable beverages because packaging size and shape can determine which retail channels, consumption occasions and customer programs a processor can serve.

SunOpta described the project as an expansion of an existing production hub rather than a new greenfield plant. The company did not disclose the line’s investment cost, annual unit output or customer commitments, so the announced 10 percent figure is best understood as added network capacity, not a forecast of immediate sales or utilization.

The ownership context has also changed. Refresco completed its acquisition of SunOpta on May 1, 2026, making the business a wholly owned subsidiary. The Midlothian line therefore adds capability inside a much larger global beverage manufacturing and supply chain network.

For customers, the practical value is flexibility. A processor able to run more package sizes can allocate volume across different product families and respond to changes in demand without relying on a single format. It can also make the plant more useful to private label and branded customers seeking multiple pack configurations.

Capacity announcements still require discipline in interpretation. Installed equipment does not reveal how quickly the line will ramp, what yields it will achieve or how much of its output has already been contracted. SunOpta has not provided those operating details, and the expansion should not be treated as evidence that all added capacity is already sold.

The line nevertheless represents a concrete manufacturing upgrade in a category where aseptic processing, packaging availability and dependable co manufacturing capacity can be important constraints. Adding two formats at an established site may offer customers a faster route to scale than qualifying an entirely new production location.

The strategic test will be utilization. If SunOpta and Refresco can fill the added capacity with a durable mix of plant based beverages, broths and teas, Midlothian becomes a more versatile node in the combined network. For now, the verified development is narrower but meaningful: a fourth line is operating, two packaging formats have been added and stated network capacity has increased by about 10 percent.
