Optimum Nutrition Sales Jump 27% as Whey Inflation Drives Prices Up 26%

Glanbia’s Optimum Nutrition brand recorded 26.9% like-for-like revenue growth in the third quarter, but the headline number was overwhelmingly a pricing story: volume rose only 0.8% while price contributed 26.1%.

The split matters for shoppers and food businesses. It shows how sharply whey inflation has moved through the sports-nutrition chain, from dairy ingredients into branded protein powders, even as underlying unit demand remained positive.

Glanbia reported the figures on 4 November in its interim management statement for the nine months ended 3 October 2026. Across the group, like-for-like revenue increased 9.9%, made up of 4.2% volume growth and 5.7% pricing.

Nearly all of the quarterly gain came from price

A simple comparison puts the Optimum Nutrition result in perspective. The 26.1 percentage-point pricing contribution accounted for about 97% of the brand’s 26.9% like-for-like quarterly growth; volume supplied roughly 3%. Those proportions are an Agrilinkage calculation from the company’s reported components, not a separate company metric.

Glanbia said the pricing actions responded to significant whey inflation and were implemented across the Americas and international markets over the past year. Optimum Nutrition still achieved positive volume growth, which suggests the brand retained demand despite the increases, but the narrow volume gain also makes future consumer resistance an important risk to watch.

For the first nine months, Optimum Nutrition like-for-like revenue rose 25.8%. The brand represented 79% of Glanbia’s Performance Nutrition revenue, making its pricing power central to the division’s results rather than a small portfolio effect.

Ingredient businesses showed a different mix

Glanbia’s Health & Nutrition unit delivered 9.8% like-for-like revenue growth as volume climbed 11.5% and price fell 1.7%. The company attributed the lower price component mainly to tariff refunds and customer volume rebates, while acquisitions in Brazil and India added another 3.0% to total constant-currency growth.

Dairy Nutrition revenue increased 2.1%, combining 1.4% volume growth with 0.7% pricing. Glanbia said protein solutions achieved double-digit pricing, but that gain was partly offset by negative pricing in cheese markets. Demand was strongest in high-protein ready-to-eat foods and healthy snacks.

The contrast is useful for manufacturers. Branded sports nutrition absorbed steep whey-related price increases, while the broader ingredients business grew mainly through volume and customer demand. That means there is no single protein-market signal: pricing, product format and end market are moving differently.

Higher guidance, with a difficult comparison ahead

Glanbia raised expected full-year adjusted earnings-per-share growth to 22%–24% at constant currencies, from 17%–20%. It also lifted its Performance Nutrition like-for-like revenue forecast to 16%–17%, from 12%–14%, and narrowed Dairy Nutrition EBITDA guidance to $175 million–$180 million from $170 million–$180 million.

The next test is whether volume continues to grow after the latest pricing actions. Investors and buyers should watch whey input costs, Optimum Nutrition’s quarterly unit volumes, promotional intensity and whether competitors follow with similar increases. A slowdown in pricing with steady volume would indicate normalization; weakening volume while prices remain high would signal consumer pushback.
