Mondelēz Canada has invested in Area One Farms Fund V, a Canadian farmland investment strategy that partners with growth oriented family farms.

The snack manufacturer says the investment is intended to support farm expansion while strengthening the resilience of Canadian agricultural supply chains and encouraging locally appropriate regenerative agriculture practices.

The commitment was made through the Mondelēz Sustainable Futures impact investment platform, with impact investment firm Sagana supporting sourcing and due diligence.

The structure is notable because it places a large food manufacturer further upstream in the financing of agricultural production. Rather than simply purchasing ingredients through conventional procurement relationships, the investment provides capital to a vehicle focused on farm growth and stewardship.

For food manufacturers, agricultural resilience has become increasingly connected to long term ingredient availability, climate exposure and the financial capacity of farms to invest in land, equipment and production systems.

Mondelēz did not frame the investment as direct ownership of individual farms. The capital is committed to Area One Farms Fund V, which works with Canadian farm operators through its investment strategy.
