J. Higgs Loaded Bacon and Cheddar Chips Recalled Over Undeclared Soy

Saratoga Potato Chips is recalling two date codes of 7.75 ounce J. Higgs Loaded Bacon and Cheddar Potato Chips because the packages may contain soy that is not declared on the label. The company announcement was dated September 16, 2026, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published it on September 18.

The recall covers packages bearing UPC 0-51933-31645-4 and marked Best if USED BY DEC 11 26 or DEC 18 26. The date code appears at the top right of the flexible metallic bag, giving consumers and retailers a specific way to distinguish the affected product from other J. Higgs chips.

According to the FDA notice, the recalled chips were distributed to Save A Lot stores in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Maryland. The announcement does not extend the recall to every J. Higgs product or every package of the same flavor.

Soy is one of the major food allergens that must be declared under U.S. labeling rules. For people with a soy allergy or severe sensitivity, consuming an undeclared soy ingredient can cause a serious or potentially life threatening reaction.

No illnesses or injuries had been reported in connection with the product when the company announcement was posted. Saratoga Potato Chips said the issue was identified through a company review and that the recall was ongoing.

Consumers who have one of the identified packages are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The company listed 1 260 969 0066 as the consumer contact number.

For retailers, the narrow scope makes lot and date code checks important. Removing only the two affected codes can help isolate the recalled inventory while avoiding unnecessary withdrawal of packages that are not named in the notice.

The case also illustrates why allergen controls extend beyond formulation. Ingredient records, label approval, packaging changeovers and finished product review all have to align before a snack product reaches stores.
