Home Grown Broccoli Sprouting Seeds Recalled Nationwide Over Salmonella Risk
EAK Distribution has recalled Home Grown Green Sprouting Calabrese Broccoli Seeds sold nationwide through Amazon after Salmonella was detected in a sample tied to the underlying bulk seed lot. The recall covers the 8 ounce Heirloom pouch, and the company says no illnesses have been reported from its product.
The affected package carries UPC 850056627443 and production lot code AUG172026 embossed into the top seal. Consumers should check both identifiers because the action is limited to this specific product and lot rather than every packet sold under the Home Grown name.
According to the company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on October 2, the recalled seeds were sold on Amazon between August 20 and September 18, 2026. Sales stopped on September 17 after the supplier warned EAK Distribution about a possible problem with bulk lot W4105.
The recall moved from precaution to confirmed contamination after the supplier told EAK Distribution on September 28 that Salmonella had been detected in a broccoli seed sample collected and analyzed by the FDA. EAK Distribution says it has stopped production and distribution of the affected item.
The supply chain detail matters because seeds intended for sprouting can carry bacteria into a warm and humid growing environment. Those conditions are also favorable for rapid bacterial growth, so contamination present on a small number of seeds can become a larger food safety problem by the time sprouts are eaten.
The company said the bulk seed lot had been used by a sprout grower whose finished product became part of an FDA investigation into a multistate foodborne illness outbreak. The announcement does not say that illnesses have been directly linked to the Home Grown retail seed packets, and it explicitly reports no known illnesses from this product.
Consumers who bought the affected packet are advised not to use the seeds and to dispose of them. Amazon customers can contact the retailer for a full refund. EAK Distribution is also taking questions at 541-306-4278 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday.
Salmonella infection can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Serious infections are more likely in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Anyone who used the recalled seeds and develops concerning symptoms should seek medical advice rather than relying on the absence of previously reported cases.
