A 30,000-tonne cargo of Belarusian granular muriate of potash is headed for the United States, marking the first U.S.-bound shipment of Belarusian potash in four years. The cargo left Russia’s Bronka port in September and is expected to reach New Orleans in mid-October.

The shipment matters because potash is a core fertilizer input and the U.S. market is heavily dependent on imports. Canada supplies close to four-fifths of U.S. potash imports, so the re-entry of Belarus creates an additional supply channel even though one cargo is far too small to reset market structure on its own.

Sanctions policy opened the door

The commercial move follows a change in U.S. sanctions policy. In December 2025, the U.S. Treasury issued a general license authorizing transactions involving Belaruskali, Belarusian Potash Company and related entities. Treasury later removed relevant entities from the sanctions list in March 2026, making the earlier general license no longer necessary.

Belarus remains constrained by European sanctions and has had to reroute fertilizer exports through Russia rather than its former Baltic logistics chain. That makes transport cost and route efficiency important variables in whether additional U.S.-bound cargoes become commercially attractive.

One shipment is a signal, not a new normal

The 30,000-tonne cargo is significant as a market-access event, but it should not be read as proof that Belarus will quickly regain a large U.S. share. Canadian supply remains dominant, and future Belarusian volumes will depend on freight economics, pricing, sanctions policy and buyer willingness.

For fertilizer buyers, the immediate development is greater optionality. For producers and traders, the more important question is whether this becomes a repeat trade lane rather than a one-off shipment.
