ABARES has released its Australian Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistics 2025 data, covering production, trade, seafood consumption and employment to the 2024–25 financial year. The publication brings together jurisdictional production records and Australian Bureau of Statistics trade information.

Why this matters

The report distinguishes commercial wild-catch fishing from farmed aquatic production, a key separation for processors and retailers because the two sectors have different supply risks, operating costs and environmental oversight. It also provides downloadable statistical tables and separate reports on Commonwealth fisheries and trade.

The limits and what happens next

This is a data-resource report rather than a claim that all seafood output increased. Buyers and analysts should inspect the appropriate species and state tables instead of assuming a national aggregate describes shrimp, salmon, tuna or other individual seafood markets.
