Japan's ARK Raises About $8.5 Million to Expand Modular Land Based Aquaculture

Japanese aquaculture technology company ARK has raised approximately $8.5 million in Series A financing as it develops modular recirculating aquaculture systems and expands beyond its home market.
ARK designs, manufactures and sells equipment and technology for land based aquaculture. Its business also includes seafood production through its own farms, joint projects and contract production.
The company plans to use the financing to advance its modular RAS technology and support expansion into markets including the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
Recirculating aquaculture systems are designed to reuse and treat water within controlled production environments. They can reduce dependence on coastal sites and provide tighter control over water quality, but commercial economics depend heavily on species, energy use, system design, biological performance and operating discipline.
ARK's modular approach targets a different deployment model from very large single site RAS projects. Smaller standardized systems can potentially lower the barrier to establishing production in markets where conventional aquaculture infrastructure is limited.
The financing gives ARK additional capital to test whether that model can scale internationally. As with other RAS technologies, successful expansion will ultimately depend on reliable biological performance and unit economics outside pilot conditions.
