Alfa Laval Folds Desmet Into Food Engineering Unit, Linking Oilseed Processing From Seed to Final Product

Alfa Laval is fully integrating Desmet into its Food & Pharma division, turning a business it acquired in 2022 into part of a broader process-engineering operation spanning oilseed extraction, edible oils, fats, feed and biofuels.

The move is commercially important because Desmet sits near the front of the processing chain, while Alfa Laval is strong in separation, heat transfer and downstream processing. The combined offering is intended to cover more of the route from oilseed to finished product.

Desmet will stop operating as a separate business

Desmet has operated as a separate entity since Alfa Laval acquired it four years ago. Under the new structure, it will be integrated into Business Unit Process Engineering Solutions within Alfa Laval’s Food & Pharma Division.

The Desmet name will remain, but as a product and process technology brand rather than a standalone operating organization. Alfa Laval expects the integration to be completed by July 2027.

The combined network reaches more than 150 countries

Alfa Laval says the integration will combine Desmet’s upstream extraction expertise with its own separation, heat-transfer and downstream technologies, supported by local teams in more than 150 countries.

The companies also point to more than 34,000 projects delivered across process industries, four innovation centers and 164 patents across the combined technology base.

Why it matters to food processors

For edible-oil and ingredient producers, one supplier covering more of the process chain can reduce the number of engineering interfaces in large projects. That can matter in plant design, commissioning, service, spare parts and efforts to improve yield or energy efficiency.

The integration does not itself create new processing capacity. Its significance is strategic: Alfa Laval is consolidating more of the food, feed and biofuel processing technology stack under one operating structure, potentially strengthening its position in large engineered projects.
