The state of Jalisco seeks to conquer the global avocado market

More than 60 countries in the world produce at least 500 varieties of avocado, Mexico produces three of the most appreciated varieties by consumers worldwide: Hass, Criollo and Fuerte.

Mexico has become the leader in the cultivation and export of avocado, the north american country supplies 45 percent of the international avocado market, with Michoacán being the main exporting state, however, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is encouraging farmers from other states as well to obtain the certifications that allow them to export.

According to the latest public data, the main avocado export destination is the United States, but it is also exported to other markets such as Japan, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, France, China, the United Kingdom, Honduras, South Korea and El Salvador.

In 2020 the production rose to 2 million 393,849 tons, in a sown area totalling 241,000 hectares with Michoacán leading the national production, with a volume of 1 million 800,021 tons followed by the state of Jalisco, State of Mexico, Nayarit, Morelos and Guerrero.

The trade of avocado and other Mexican products to more than 160 countries in the world is possible thanks to the fact that they comply with the health and safety requirements imposed by each nation to which it is exported.

In this regard, the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, announced that progress is being made in negotiations with the United States government to start exporting avocado from the state of Jalisco to the US.

For this matter, he has held meetings with the United States Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas Vilsack, who has shown interest in opening up exports given the demand for avocado consumption in that nation.

"It is very likely that soon we will give the good news of the export of avocado from Jalisco, which will have an important impact for the state," said Villalobos Arámbula.
