WHY MOROCCAN ARGAN OIL
The Only Oil
in the World with no
Substitute Origin.
Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), which grows across a unique region in southwest Morocco, stretching from the coastal area around Essaouira south through the Souss-Massa plain to Tiznit, Taroudant, and the foothills of the Anti-Atlas mountains, across approximately 820,000 hectares of protected argan forest.
Morocco is the world's primary commercial source of argan oil, no other country produces it at scale. This geographic concentration has shaped the global cosmetics and specialty food industry for decades.
For international buyers, this concentration means that Morocco is your origin regardless of supplier chain. The variables that actually matter are: which producer or cooperative you buy from, what their certifications cover, whether their CoA is from an independent accredited laboratory, and whether you are paying origin price or inflated intermediary margins. AgriLinkage connects buyers directly with verified Moroccan producers and cooperatives, the first option.
The global market is valued at $700 million in 2025 and projected to reach $1.18B by 2035 (FactMR), driven by North America (approximately 33% of demand), Europe, and accelerating adoption across Asia and Latin America. Cosmetic grade dominates at 63% of market share; hair care leads applications at 46%. Demand growth is structural, major brands including L'Oréal, OGX, and Josie Maran have made argan oil a permanent formulation ingredient, not a trend.
01
Unique geographic origin, supply cannot be diversified
Unlike most agricultural commodities, there is no substitute origin for argan oil. Buyers cannot shift to a different country if Moroccan prices rise. This gives verified Moroccan suppliers a structural advantage, and makes quality verification at source more important than in any other commodity category.
02
Dual market: cosmetics and food, different specs
Cosmetic-grade argan oil accounts for approximately 90% of global production. Culinary-grade (food-grade, cold-pressed from roasted kernels) is a smaller but growing segment, particularly in the North American and European specialty food market. The two grades are distinct in processing, certification requirements, and permitted labeling, understanding the difference is essential before placing any order.
03
Cooperative structure matters for traceability
A significant portion of Moroccan argan oil is produced by women's cooperatives across the argan-producing regions, over 688 certified cooperatives employing 13,774+ individuals. Beyond cooperatives, Morocco also has private processing companies and larger exporters who source from regional harvesters. Buying through verified cooperatives or certified producers ensures traceability, supports Fair Trade eligibility, and provides the documentation chain required for ECOCERT and COSMOS certification. AgriLinkage verifies documentation and export capacity before any introduction, whether the supplier is a cooperative or a certified producer.
04
Adulteration is the #1 risk, know how to verify
Grades, certifications, seasonal windows, pricing benchmarks, import documentation, trade agreement implications, the information buyers need to make a sourcing decision, not just a contact list.
GRADES & TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Cosmetic grade vs. culinary grade —
what you need to know.
The same tree. The same kernel. Fundamentally different products. Grade selection determines certification pathway, regulatory compliance, labeling requirements, and end-use application. Specifying the wrong grade is the most common and most costly error in argan oil procurement.

CERTIFICATION GUIDE
Which certifications you need
for your market.
Certification requirements depend on your end market, end use, and how you intend to label the product. This guide covers every certification relevant to argan oil B2B buyers in the US, EU, and Latin America.
ECOCERT
ECOCERT Organic Certification
The foundational organic certification for Moroccan argan oil. Required if labeling as organic in the EU, US (NOP-equivalent), or any market with organic regulation. Issued at cooperative level. Covers cultivation, harvesting, extraction, and handling chain.
Fair Trade
Fair Trade / WFTO Certification
Issued at cooperative level. Certifies living wages, fair purchasing practices, and safe working conditions for cooperative members. Required by buyers who carry Fair Trade positioning (body shop chains, ethical beauty brands). Adds approximately 10–15% to base price.
COSMOS
COSMOS-Standard Certification
EU/international standard for natural and organic cosmetic ingredients. Required for cosmetics brands selling "certified organic" or "certified natural" finished products in European markets. COSMOS-certified argan oil is compliant with NATRUE, Ecocert, and equivalent EU standards simultaneously.
CoA
Certificate of Analysis (Per Batch)
Not a certification body, a mandatory document per shipment from an accredited third-party laboratory. Must include: FFA, peroxide value, tocopherol content, sterol profile, fatty acid composition, moisture, and UV absorbance (K232, K270). Non-negotiable for any order regardless of volume.
Import duty advantages by destination.
European Union Preferential Rate
EU-Morocco Association Agreement (2000). Present EUR.1 movement certificate — issued by Moroccan customs at export. Reduces or eliminates standard import tariff. Standard rate for argan oil: 0% under preferential agreement.
United States
0% Duty
US-Morocco Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA, January 2006). HS code 1515.90, argan oil. File preference claim at CBP entry. Present Certificate of Origin. Zero import duty on all argan oil grades.
Latin America Standard Tariff
No direct FTA between Morocco and Mexico, Colombia, Chile, or Argentina. Standard tariff applies, typically 5–15% depending on country. Consult your customs broker for HS code 1515.90 classification. Competitive despite standard tariff given origin price advantage.
GLOBAL MARKET DATA 2024–2025
Where argan oil demand
is coming from.
European Union Preferential Rate
~38%
Europe represents approximately 38% of global demand. France and Spain are leading importers. COSMOS-standard certification is the benchmark for organic cosmetics claims. EUR.1 movement certificate provides preferential tariff access under the EU-Morocco Association Agreement. REACH regulation compliance applies for cosmetic ingredients placed on the EU market.
United States
0% Duty
33%
Largest single market by value, approximately 33% of global demand (IMARC, 2024). Driven by prestige beauty (Josie Maran, OGX), mass market haircare, and growing specialty food channel. Hair care leads applications at 46% market share globally. US imports under MAFTA at 0% duty. Canadian market mirrors US trends.
Asia-Pacific + LatAm
29%
Japan, South Korea, and China are growing markets. Latin America shows strong growth momentum: organic cosmetics market valued at over $900M (2024), growing towards $1.9B by 2033. Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil are active markets for cosmetic-grade argan oil bulk buyers — with no direct FTA with Morocco, standard tariffs apply but origin prices remain competitive.
ORIGIN — SOUSS-MASSA BIOSPHERE
Southwest Morocco.
The only place on earth
where argan grows.
The argan tree grows across a distinctive crescent-shaped region in southwestern Morocco — from the coastal areas around Essaouira in the north, south through the Souss-Massa plain and Agadir, down to Tiznit and the foothills of the Anti-Atlas mountains. Approximately 820,000 hectares of argan forest fall within the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere reserve, designated in 1998.
The tree's specific adaptations — deep tap roots reaching water tables 30m below arid topsoil, tolerance for saline soil, resistance to extreme temperature variation — cannot be replicated through cultivation in other environments. Commercial argan cultivation trials in Israel, California, and Australia have all failed to produce commercially viable kernel yields. Morocco's monopoly is permanent.
Production spans cooperatives and private processors operating across the provinces of Tiznit, Taroudant, Chtouka Aït Baha, Inezgane-Aït Melloul, and the Essaouira region further north. Women's cooperatives have been central to the industry's international development, the 688 certified cooperatives employ over 13,774 individuals and have driven Fair Trade and ECOCERT certification adoption at scale. Private companies and larger processors also operate across the region and supply significant export volumes to international buyers.
